Amazing Cats: How to Make Your Cats Amazing
Cats have the unfortunate reputation of being mischievous troublemakers, loners and pesky family pets. Some people shed a more forgiving light on cats by saying they're "curious" and "they have nine lives."
Regardless of these evaluations, a cat can be wonderful addition to a family! Most people don't know that you can actually train cats to do whatever tricks you can think of as well as the types of tricks that dogs do, such as:
- Sit
- Roll-over
- Lie down
If you want to make your cats amazing, start by teaching them tricks!
If you are thinking about getting a cat or if you already have a cat but sometimes find them to be boring, take a look at this hub and hopefully you will find good, informative content on how to create amazing cats, how to train cats, and other how to pointers relating to cats!
And for a few examples of some amazing cats, take a look at some of the videos in this hub! In no time at all you will be able to have cats that are lovable, hospitable and friendly, even to strangers!
Timid cats and the reasons behind the behavior
Here are some reasons why a cat might seem to be anti-social:
- They might have an illness and not want to spread it to another cat.
I had a cat that was sick with feline leukemia. She would always hide from both humans and our other cat. We found out that she did this because she didn't want to spread her leukemia to the other cat! We found this out too late and the other cat also got feline leukemia and both cats died. :(
- They might have been abused in the past.
This might be the case if you adopt a cat from an animal rescue mission or the animal shelter. We have adopted our cats (in the videos in this hub!) from an animal shelter, but they've turned out great!
- They might be scared of another human in the house.
Babies are unpredictable and can easily intimidate cats. If you don't have a baby in the house, consider looking elsewhere for the culprit. Younger siblings and young children are potential candidates for being cat-intimidators. If they are creating fear in your cat/s, this will lead to them not trusting any humans in the house.
Friendly cats- This is the First Step to Having Amazing Cats
The first step to having amazing cats is to make them friendly. If you have a family cat that seems to always hide under the sofa or desk, these could be due to several reasons. The main reason a cat is anti-social is usually because they have not been made friendly. Whether the cat has been abused in the past or not been treated nicely depends on a number of factors, but the good news is that it's not hard to turn your cat into a friendly one.
Here are some pointers to making your cat friendly:
- Spend time with them!
- Do activities with them (such as grooming or playing with a laser pointer- these are fun!)
- Be patient with them.
- Play with them- and don't scold them when they claw or bite you because I guarantee they will!
- Show them that you love them
How to teach your cat tricks
Teaching a cat a trick is a little different than teaching a dog a trick. Dogs have a strong desire to please their owners. For whatever reasons, most cats don't share that desire, so they might need a little more encouragement.
Here are some pointers that will help you teach your cat tricks, such as the ones above:
- Teach them early
The earlier you teach your cat a trick, the more likely it will be to learn it and remember it in the long run. If it's already a couple years old, don't worry- just start today!
- Teach them often
The more frequently you teach your cat a trick, the easier it will be for them to remember it.
- Solidify good behavior or performance
When your cat finally does what you want it to do (a trick, good behavior, etc.), reward them! Positive affirmation works better than negative reaction. Examples of positive affirmation include: giving them a kitty treat, petting them, playing with their favorite toy with them.
- Break larger tricks down into several smaller tricks
Don't try to teach your cat how to jump through a hoop, then sit then press a button all at once! First, teach your cat to jump through a hoop. Once he's got the hang of that, then teach him to sit. Then, after that, teach him to push a button. Combining three tricks into one "big" trick is easier than teaching one big trick at once.
- Be patient
Cats, along with all animals, require much patience! This is especially true when you're trying to teach them tricks! Go easy on them and don't loose hope when they don't get a trick- even if you've worked on it with them for days. Sometimes it's taken my wife and I months to teach our cats tricks (such as the ones on the videos in this hub!)
Amazing cats are fit cats
Part of having an amazing cat is having a cat that is fit and in shape! Believe it or not, cat obesity is a real thing, and it's on the rise in America and elsewhere. If your goal is to teach your cat incredible tricks, it's even more important that they stay in shape to be able to do those tricks!
How to weigh your cat
In order to determine if your cat is obese, you should first learn how to weigh your cat. Since most of us don't own a special animal weighing mat, here is a pretty accurate way to weigh your cat:
- Weigh yourself and record the weight
- Hold your cat steadily in your arms and weigh yourself again
- Subtract the difference
This is a pretty simple way of weighing your cat, but it works!
Do you have a fat cat(s)?
Do you have an obese cat?
If you suspect your cat might be overweight, I would strongly advise you to obtain a professional opinion as your cat's health might be at stake.
Otherwise, most experts suggest that a healthy adult cat will weigh around nine to eleven pounds. Male cats tend to be a little heavier than females, though, so keep that in mind. Also, various breeds of cats are different, so I would again stress to seek a professional if you think your cat might be overweight.
Get your cat to lose weight
If, using the above methods you have discovered you have an overweight cat, don't worry! There are a ton of things that you can do in order to get your cat back into a healthy weight range. Here are a couple of my suggestions:
- Purchase cat food designed to limit their weight.
- Limit their food intake. On the cat food packages you can usually find a guide to how much of the food you should feed them. Follow it! Also, refrain from or limit feeding your cat wet food as this is a huge culprit in creating obese cats!
- Come up with a creative game to get them to work for their food. (See video for an idea of what we do)
Flicker Food- The New Way to get your Cats to Exercise
Once you've got your cat in shape, loved on them, given them your attention and taught them new tricks, they are well on their way to being "amazing." With a little work and guidance, your cats will be fun and friendly in no time!
