Expensive Engagement Rings

Updated on January 1, 2010

The average cost of an engagement ring is about $4,000, but there are much more expensive engagement rings available. In my opinion, it's actually harder to stay under budget when shopping around for jewelry, but that has just been my experience.

If you want an engagement ring with all the bells and whistles and you have a more lenient budget than most, read on to learn what types of things you can get in some of the finest, most costly engagement rings.

Costly Rings: What Factors Make the Price Rise?

There are a number of key factors that will drive the price of an engagement ring up, and several of these factors depend on your choice of stone/s. Let's start with the more obvious things.

The type of materials used in the ring can make a huge difference in price. You can find sterling silver bands for under $20, white or yellow gold bands for $20-200+ and platinum bands for several thousands of dollars. Tungsten carbide and titanium are also popular (and pricey) options that will drive the price of your ring up.

Other metal factors that will make for an expensive purchase is the amount of metal used and the solidity of the metal. A size 4 ring uses much less metal than a size 9 ring and a band that is coated in platinum is less expensive than a solid platinum ring.

Purchasing a designer name ring will also drive up the price. Famous designers such as House of Taylor Jewelry, De Beers and those behind asscher cut engagement rings will increase cost but many say they are well worth it!

Probably the biggest factor that will affect the total cost of your ring is the type and quality of stone/s used. A diamond is more expensive than a ruby, for example, and this is why diamond engagement rings often have heftier price tags. The diamonds also need to be of high quality if they are going to significantly contribute to price. A paragon will fetch a significant price because it is a flawless diamond without any inclusions (see wikipedia's article on paragons here).

The size and number of stones is also important. Some of the world's most expensive engagement rings showcase rare and unique gemstones, whether they are pink diamonds, Colombian emeralds or blue sapphires. These pricey stones are usually surrounded in smaller impeccable diamonds to make for a gorgeous engagement ring!

Truth be told, if you don't have a budget for your engagement ring you will find no limits to the types of rings you can get. You are only limited by your imagination and might even want to consider designing your own engagement ring.

If the idea of designing your own engagement ring seems too complicated, take a look at the rings below to get some ideas and have fun! Remember, this is a special moment when you get to enjoy buying something that will hopefully last forever, just like the love you have for your future spouse!
