Don't forget to follow me on twitter where I tweet about all things wedding.
Figuring out how to stuff invitations can be a difficult task. Between the tissue paper, response card, reception card, inner envelopes and other trinkets, it is easy to be overwhelmed with the process of assembling your wedding invitations.
Since I'm a visual learner, I created this hub with lots of pictures and a video. My goal is to answer questions such as:
- How do I stuff my bi-fold wedding invitations?
- How do you assemble pocket invitations?
- How do I put my wedding invites together?
- etc.
Scroll down to see pictures of each piece of your wedding invitations and basic instructions on how to put them together. Or, you can simply watch the video below to see it all in action!
Bifold Wedding Invitations
Before learning how to stuff bifold wedding invitations, you'll need to know all the pieces of the puzzle. Here's a rundown of the items you might (or might not) have with your bi fold wedding invitations:
Wedding Invitations
This is the centerpiece of your invitation ensemble. Wedding invitations come in a variety of sizes and flavors, but for this example we have a bi-fold wedding invitation.
This particular invitation involves some light assembly- the bow will need to be put on each wedding invitation.
RSVP or Response Card
A response card gives your guests a chance to let you know that they will or will not be attending your wedding. This is vital information in order to get a head count and keep your wedding budget in check.
Response Card Envelope
Along with your response cards you should have received response card envelopes. These envelopes fit your RSVP cards and should be put underneath the card with the flap showing on the top.
Also, don't forget to put a stamp on and address your RSVP card envelopes!
Reception Card
A reception card informs your guests of the location of your wedding reception and that they are invited to the reception.
There is no envelope for the reception card.
Tissue Paper
The tissue paper is more of a wedding tradition and doesn't serve much of a practical purpose. Tissue paper was initially used when the ink didn't dry instantly like it does today. The tissues were in place simply to prevent smudging!
Inner Envelope
The inner envelope of your wedding invitation ensemble isn't required but adds a nice touch. This particular one is lined in an elegant purple.
Inner envelopes have only the name/s of guests written on the front and nothing more.
Outer Envelope
The outer envelope of your wedding invitation ensemble is what your guests will see when the get your invitation in the mail.
The address of your wedding guests should be on the front, and the return address (if you're having it printed for you) is usually printed on the back flap.
How to Stuff Bi-fold Wedding Invitations
Here are the step-by-step directions on how to stuff bi-fold wedding invitations:
- Complete the minor assembly that might be required for your wedding invitations (stick bows or ribbons onto the invitations, etc.)
- Put a single tissue paper on top of the print on the invitations
- Place your reception card and/or printed informal note card on top of tissue paper, facing up
- Place your RSVP card with envelope (as seen in photo!) on top of the items in step #3
- Close your bi-fold wedding invitation and place it into the inner envelope, facing up. The goal is to have the invitation ensemble be pulled out by your guests and readily readable (not up-side-down or reversed).
- Address your inner envelope with only the guests' names, close it and place it into the outer envelope facing up. Again the goal is to have it pulled out and readily readable.
- Address your outer envelope and voila, you're done!
Pocket Wedding Invitations
Learning how to stuff pocket invitations is a little different than other wedding invitations. First off, there are no inner envelopes. There is also a pocket that has different pieces of the wedding invite put in it.
Here's a rundown of the items you might (or might not) have with your pocket wedding invitations:
Wedding Invitations
The actually wedding invitation is a beautifully printed card that is adhered (with glue or tape) to the pocket piece itself.
The glue or double-sided tape should come with the wedding invitations, but some assembly is required here since the invitation card and the pocket piece don't come pre assembled.
RSVP or Response Card
A response card (often called an RSVP card) gives your guests a chance to let you know that they will or will not be attending your wedding.
Response Card Envelope
If you ordered response cards you should also have received response card envelopes. These envelopes fit your RSVP cards and should be put underneath the card with the flap showing on the top (see photo for example).
Also, don't forget to put a stamp on and address your RSVP card envelopes!

- Insert the reception card and/or printed informal note card vertically into the pocket at the bottom of the pocket invitation piece.
- Insert the RSVP card and envelope (as shown in previous picture) vertically into the pocket at the bottom of the piece. This should be on top of the reception card but it is okay to have both the RSVP and response cards showing in the invitation rather than having the RSVP card fully covered.
- Fold your pocket invitation closed, then insert it into the outer envelope, facing up.
- Address the outer envelope and voila- you're done!

I need to tell you about the most amazing invitation given my sister in law. She hosted a muslim couple and their children from India and as a gift, they brought her a wedding invitation that the husband had designed for an upcoming wedding. The scroll invite was contained in a large gold box at least 15 inches long and 8 inches high and had a lid as well as drawers! I guess these invitations are delivered by a delivery person. The invitations alone ran over $1000! What a keepsake for friends and family. It was a solid memento but... overwhelming.
WHAT IF YOU KNEW TO PUT THE STAMP ON THE REASPONS ENVELOPES. BUT YOU FORGOT TO DO IT AND SEALED THEM UP TIGHT!?? DO YOU LOOK CHEEP OR STUPID?
Traditionally you put the name of the people who are invited on the inner envelope, with pocket invitations there's no inner envelope so where do you put this information? Do you write it on the outside of the pocket?
thanks, carol
A great read. I love your photos, and think your hub would be helpful to those planning a wedding. Nicely presented.
Thanks for sharing your ideas.......
What if you forget to mention the reception on the invitation and did not include a reception card? I have already mailed them. Should I send out a seperate response card?

When I think of stuffing wedding envelopes, I can't help but be reminded of that Seinfeld epsiode where George's fiance dies from licking cheap envelopes. LOL! Great job on the hub. :)
