Ruby Engagement Rings

Updated on August 9, 2010

Rubies are gorgeous rare stones and make for perfect jewels in ruby engagement rings. In fact, rubies are considered one of four precious stones along with the emerald, sapphire and diamond. It's no wonder that this form of engagement ring is so popular today.

There are a number of things to consider when purchasing a ruby engagement ring. First, you need to know a few things about the type of ruby used in your ring in order to know its value. Second, you need to know the symbolism behind the stone. And finally, you need to make sure your fiancée would like to receive a ruby engagement ring!

If you know these three things, you will be fully informed to make a decision on your engagement ring, and that is what I would like to help you do in this article.

How are Rubies valued?

Rubies are valued in almost the exact same way as diamonds. There are four things you should know about that effect a ruby's value:

  1. Color
  2. Clarity
  3. Cut
  4. Carat (size of stone)

Factors that will drive up the price of a ruby is a bright stone color (closest to pigeon blood-red), a "crystal clear" stone and/or a large carat size, amongst others.

Symbolism Behind the Ruby

Rubies are full of meaning, just like many other precious stones. The ruby isn't simply the birthstone for July- it is so much more!

Characteristics attributed to rubies: devotion, integrity, courage, vitality and happiness.

Meaning of the word "ruby": "red" as derived from the Latin word "ruber".

Symbolism a ruby carries: red rubies carry the rich symbolism of love and passion. Red is closely associated with fire and blood, so rubies are associated with warmth and life for humankind.

Will My Girlfriend Like A Ruby Engagement Ring?

This is a question that I simply cannot answer. In order for you to answer it, though, remember the meaning behind the red ruby. Think of what it symbolizes and what it might represent for your fiancée.

Should you choose to get her a ruby engagement ring, be sure to explain to her that it is symbolic of your passionate love for her. Tell her that she brings warmth to your heart, that you have a deep love for her and that she brings you happiness.

If you think your girlfriend wouldn't like a ruby engagement ring, consider buying her a diamond engagement ring, solitaire engagement ring or gemstone engagement ring.

Or, if you want to buy something really unique for her, check out the Celtic engagement rings or sapphire engagement rings.
