Wedding Themes- Why Have One?

Wedding themes are gaining more and more interest in today's weddings and for good reasons. The endless desire to have a unique experience transforms etiquette and pushes trends forward. Having a theme can even save you money!

Above all this, though, is the reaction you will get from guests. If you organize it well and "hit a home run" your friends and family will talk about your wedding for many years to come.

In my time as a wedding consultant I have witnessed a wide variety of wedding themes. I'll share some of the more popular wedding themes which will hopefully help you either decide which one you might want to use or even just help you decide whether or not you want one in the first place.

Top Three Wedding Themes

Different Parts of the Wedding

Creating an atmosphere and theme for your wedding cannot happen if only one part of your wedding sticks with the theme. If you made just your reception stick to the theme and your ceremony was traditional, your wedding wouldn't quite encapsulate that theme.

And it is not as if that is wrong. Many couples choose to "get crazy" with the reception theme but have everything else stay traditional. (That's what we did actually!) If you want to go all-out, however, consider having your theme run through the following aspects of your wedding:

Location

The location you choose for your wedding goes a long way to create the mood and atmosphere for your special day. Therefore, choosing a location that fits well within your chosen theme will go a long way toward creating that environment you want.

The wedding ceremony and the reception location, whether they are the same or not, both need to contribute to that all important wedding theme.

Wedding Invitations

Your wedding invitation cards will set the theme of your wedding before it takes place. Because there is truly a wedding invitation for every conceivable theme, you are bound to find a card that fits your chosen theme. (For example, this wedding invitations website offers an almost endless supply of unique wedding invites.)

Different aspects of wedding invitations to consider customizing for your theme are:

  • Card style
  • Font selection
  • Ink choices
  • Wordage

Ceremony

The wedding ceremony is often the hardest thing for brides and grooms to compromise on because tradition run so rich through the event. Having said that, there are quite a few ways you can have your theme shine through the ceremony event without going overboard and insulting the "tradition-only" crowd.

Different aspects of the ceremony to consider customizing for your theme:

  • Dress of bridal party
  • Staff uniforms
  • Locale decor
  • Ceremony props

Reception

The reception is typically where the wedding theme shows up, especially for those weddings where the couple is uncomfortable or hesitant to have the theme common through each element of the wedding.

Different aspects of the reception to consider customizing for your theme:

  • Decor
  • Food
  • Music
